Troubleshoot Your Spray Equipment

As with any vehicle or any type of heavy-duty equipment, over time, parts will need to be repaired or replaced. By paying attention to warning signs, you can nip common issues in the bud and keep your spray rig performing the way it should. Here are a few troubleshooting tips for common spray equipment issues:

Problem: Spray system starts leaking fluid

Possible Causes:

  • Loose or damaged fittings, hoses or tubes – Solution: Tighten or replace the fitting, hose or tube.
  • Damaged or missing O-rings or seals – Solution: Replace the O-ring or seal.
  • Leaking drain valve on the spray tank – Solution: Repair or replace the drain valve.

 

Problem: Spray pumps start leaking fluid

Possible Cause:

  • Faulty diaphragms in pump – Solution: Replace the diaphragm.

 

Problem: Suction hose vibrating

Possible Causes:

  • Air leaks in the spray pump suction line or suction tube in spray tank – Solution: Repair or replace line or tube.
  • Restricted suction line – Solution: Unclog or remove object that’s restricting the suction line.
  • Damaged diaphragm in suction dampener – Solution: Replace the diaphragm.

 

Problem: Low spray pressure

Possible Causes:

  • Restricted suction line – Solution: Unclog or remove object that’s restricting the suction line.
  • Worn or damaged spray nozzles – Solution: Replace spray nozzle.
  • Loose or leaking pressure line – Solution: Tighten or repair pressure line.
  • Low engine speed – Solution: Increase engine speed.
  • Stuck or lodged pressure relief valve – Solution: Dislodge or replace pressure relief valve.
  • Damaged spray pump – Solution: Repair or replace spray pump.

 

Problem: Leaking spray boom nozzle when in OFF position

Possible Cause:

  • Leaking or damaged diaphragm in turret – Solution: Repair or replace diaphragm.

 

Problem: Spray pump not rotating

Possible Causes:

  • Depressed vehicle clutch pedal – Solution: Lift the vehicle clutch pedal.
  • Faulty or damaged auxiliary PTO – Solution: Repair or replace auxiliary PTO.
  • Damaged or missing PTO drive shaft – Solution: Repair or replace PTO drive shaft.

 

Problem: Irregular spray from boom

Possible Causes:

  • Clogged strainer – Solution: Unclog strainer.
  • Damaged suction or pressure dampener – Solution: Repair or replace suction or pressure dampener.
  • Damaged, dirty or corroded console boom switches – Solution: Repair, clean or replace console boom switch.
  • Worn out rate control motor – Solution: Replace rate control motor.

 

Problem: No spray output

Possible Causes:

  • Pinched or clogged hoses – Solution: Unclog hose.
  • Boom valve motor not opening – Solution: Open, repair or replace boom valve motor.
  • Damaged, dirty or corroded console boom switches – Solution: Repair, clean or replace console boom switch.

 

Problem: Low spray rate

Possible Causes:

  • Clogged or damaged spray nozzles – Solution: Unclog, repair or replace spray nozzle.
  • Incorrect nozzle size – Solution: Check nozzle size and replace with the correct one.
